GUIDE · PLANNING

How do you size a grain silo?

Total capacity is only one criterion. Crop separation and dispatch patterns can change the configuration.

A capacity of 3,000 tonnes can mean different configurations. The design brief needs to describe both the quantity and how you plan to manage it.

1. Separate annual volume from simultaneous stock.

Annual throughput is not automatically the storage capacity you need. Peak stock, harvest sequences and the timing of dispatch all matter.

2. Plan batches before deciding the cell count.

Crop type, quality, moisture or intended market may require separate batches. Discuss which products will be present at the same time and which need separation.

3. Check what capacity in tonnes means.

Converting volume into tonnes depends on bulk density and filling assumptions. Ask for the reference product and capacity conditions to be stated in the quotation.

A useful opening question: “What do I need to store at the same time, in which batches and for how long?”

4. Coordinate storage with intake and discharge.

Silo count affects conveying routes and operation. Aeration, monitoring and emptying time belong in the same assessment.

5. Leave room for the next stage.

Spare land alone is not enough for expansion. Check conveying, structures, utilities and access during concept design. Some interfaces can be anticipated if the project and budget allow.

Indicative guidance for preparing a brief. Sizing, verification and construction solutions require actual project data.
